How does Bluetooth work?

Bluetooth is the result of cooperation between numerous parties. The basic radio procedure is essentially due to the work of the Dutch professor Jaap Haartsen and the Swede Sven Mattisson, both of whom worked for the mobile communications and Internet company Ericsson.

#1. The Bluetooth chip

The prerequisite for a digital device to be considered “Bluetooth-enabled” is the appropriate software for controlling the data transfer and a special Bluetooth chip that has a transmitter and receiver unit and is permanently installed in the hardware.

#2. The Bluetooth connection

The dedicated Bluetooth frequency is in a license-free ISM band between 2.402 GHz and 2.480 GHz. Compatible devices that meet the standards of the Bluetooth SIG are allowed to transmit worldwide in this frequency range as so-called short-range devices (SRD). In order to be able to clearly identify itself for this, each device has an individual, 48-bit MAC address.

ISM bands (Industrial, Scientific and Medical Bands) are frequency bands that can be used by radiofrequency devices in industry, science, medicine and in domestic environments without a license and (mostly) without a license. A frequency band or range denotes a sub-range of the electromagnetic spectrum that is used for technical communication.

A connection can originate from any device that rises to a “ master ” (“master”) compared to the “ slaves ” (“slaves”, i.e. the devices involved) and thereby a so-called “ piconet ” (a Bluetooth network ).

This remains until the master deactivates the Bluetooth function in its system. Devices that want to dial into a piconet “listen” in scan mode every 2.56 seconds after a signal from the master. The connection is then established on average within 1.28 seconds. The connection of two or more devices via Bluetooth is also called ” pairing “.

In practice, the participants in a piconet must be in close proximity to one another and have activated the Bluetooth function on their respective devices. Depending on the device, activation takes place via special software, a control panel or a button on which the Bluetooth symbol can be seen.

The connection establishment must then be authorized using a (usually four-digit) PIN, which is displayed on the screen of the slave device or is noted in the relevant manual. Why is there Bluetooth?

The invention of Bluetooth stems from the well-known problem of “cable spaghetti”: Since the 1980s, various means have been used to replace conventional, wired connection technologies with wireless alternatives.

The Bluetooth SIG, founded in September 1998, is today a non-profit organization made up of a total of approx. 33,000 companies (as of 2017), which together define the Bluetooth standards and further advance the development of radio technology. Any company that develops and produces Bluetooth-enabled devices is obliged to participate in the organization. The most important SIG promoters are currently Apple, Ericsson, Lenovo, Nokia, Toshiba, Intel, and Microsoft.

The fact that the companies involved, Ericsson and Nokia, both come from Scandinavia, should have been a decisive factor in the choice of name: The word “Bluetooth” is said to remind of Harald Blauzahn, the Danish Viking king.

In the 10th century, he managed to unite the enemy parts of Norway and Denmark into one kingdom. Incidentally, the iconic Bluetooth symbol represents a combination of the old Norse runes ᚼ and , which stand for Harald Blauzahn’s initials (HB).
